Ghost Posting Is Taking Over Gen Z's Instagram
Posting on Instagram used to come with a fairly obvious goal: for people to see what we posted. Gen Z is turning that idea on its head.
A growing number of people are "ghost posting," a trick that lets them add photos to their profiles without making a big production out of every new picture.
The Instagram ghost posting trend is a little sneaky, a little complicated, and surprisingly relatable.
What Is Ghost Posting?
The whole concept revolves around Instagram's archive feature. You can upload a photo and immediately archive it, temporarily removing it from your profile.
After waiting a few days, you can restore the post so it appears on your grid again.
The idea is to get the photo onto your profile without giving it the same grand entrance as a typical new post. These posts are also known as "lowkey posts."
Even though Instagram's archive tool has been around since 2017, it needed Gen Z to find it a new job.
Why Is Gen Z Ghost Posting?
For a generation that grew up with social media, posting can come with a surprising amount of pressure.
Who liked it? Who didn't? Did anyone comment? Does the picture look too posed? Worse, does it look like we tried too hard to make it look like we didn't try?
That social media posting anxiety appears to be part of the appeal. Some people want their Instagram profiles to work more like a mood board, where they can keep the photos they like without turning every upload into a performance.
Recently, a YouGov poll found that more than half of adult Gen Z respondents didn’t like expressing themselves online because they were afraid they’d seem cringe.
Ghost posting is a workaround. You can keep the picture, but lose some of the pressure.
The Gen Z Instagram Trend Is Surprisingly Old-School
For all the extra steps, there's something sort of old-fashioned about the idea.
Before social media turned our pictures into content, photo albums were something we kept for ourselves and pulled out for other people to flip through.
Ghost posting nudges Instagram a little closer to that. Our profiles can still look cute and curated. But, every new addition doesn't need its own round of applause.
Instagram Is Getting a Little Quieter
This Gen Z Instagram trend also fits in with other ways people are trying to make social media feel less performative.
Private accounts, Close Friends stories, hidden like counts, and casual photo dumps have offered ways for us to share without making every moment look like a carefully staged announcement.
Post Now, Be Perceived Later
Social media spent years teaching us how to attract as much attention as possible.
Ghost posting, Gen Z style, goes in the opposite direction. The picture gets a permanent home on Instagram, but we get to skip some of the immediate attention that comes with putting something new online.
Maybe that's the strange little charm of it all. We haven't stopped wanting to share our lives with others. Some of us just want to do it without everyone watching all at once.
