3 Cowboys Fined League-Leading $33K for Flagrant Actions in Week 1
The Cowboys didn't just lose to the Giants in Week 1, they also picked up the most fine money in the league doing it. Three Dallas players were hit with a combined $33,409 in fines for flagrant actions during the loss, giving the Cowboys the league lead just one week into the season.
Javonte Williams
Williams' fine was the most expected of the three. On his fourth-quarter touchdown catch-and-run, with about five and a half minutes left, Williams held the ball out toward a Giants defender as he crossed the goal line and was flagged for taunting. That penalty pushed Dallas back 15 yards on the extra point attempt.
It ended up being a costly sequence. Head coach Brian Schottenheimer said afterward that the original plan was to go for two to cut the deficit to six points, setting up a potential game-winning touchdown drive. Instead, with the penalty moving the Cowboys back, Dallas attempted a longer extra point that Brandon Aubrey missed, leaving them down eight. Williams later apologized to his teammates for the taunt and said he wouldn't be celebrating touchdowns that way going forward. The penalty cost him $11,941.
DeMarvion Overshown
Overshown's fine came from a hit on Giants quarterback Jaxson Dart just a few minutes into the game. Dart had already crossed the sideline at the end of a run when Overshown laid him out, drawing a 15-yard unnecessary roughness penalty. Combined with Dart's 22-yard run on the play, the penalty put New York in position to score its first touchdown of the game.
Overshown didn't finish the game either, exiting in the fourth quarter with a hamstring injury that will keep him out for Week 2 and possibly longer. His fine came out to $9,527.
Donovan Ezeiruaku
Ezeiruaku picked up a facemask penalty just before the two-minute warning, the ninth penalty called against Dallas in the game. The unnecessary roughness call cost him $11,941. It wasn't the first time he's been fined for something similar, as he also drew a facemask penalty and fine against the Giants in last year's regular-season finale.
