Spotify Account Holders Report Streaming Issues, Platform Responds
Update: Spotify’s status account earlier on Sunday morning posted on X at 1:36 p.m. ET, stating, “Everything’s looking much better now! Give @SpotifyCares a shout if you still need help.”
Spotify was crackling for the better part of Sunday morning, with thousands of its users in the U.S. reporting technical issues accessing the streaming platform.
A Spotify outage affecting thousands of its users was reported on Sunday around 10:45 ET a.m. on September 29th, according to data provided by Downdetector.com, an outage tracking website.
Reports provided by the site noted that this outage had impacted close to 40,600 users in the U.S.. But while the issue had been noticed earlier, as mentioned above, it wasn’t until around 9:40 p.m. that Spotify down, became a trending topic.
Many of the affected users rushed to X (formerly Twitter) to share updates on Spotify not working, including how this disruption was affecting their normal weekend routines.
It’s worth noting that Spotify is one of the largest internet-delivered services and has more than 246 million paying subscribers as of the second quarter of 2024.
Spotify Login Problem – What the Platform Said
Spotify was quick to acknowledge the outage, noting, “We've been getting some reports that Spotify is down across platforms. The Support Site looks affected as well.”
The support team added, “We are aware of the outage situation, and our various technical teams are working as fast as they can to restore normal services.”
Past Spotify Outage Instances
Spotify, like many other internet-delivered services, has in the past experienced intermittent problems, including outages. For example, in March 2022, its users encountered login issues, with the platform sending a prompt stating that their username and password combination was incorrect; fortunately, these issues were resolved about an hour and a half later after the team was made aware of the problem.
By the end of June 2024, Spotify reported that it had over 626 million users on its platform, representing a sequential gain of around 11 million active users. Of the 626 million users, 246 were premium subscribers, which meant that the platform had added seven million premium members in its second quarter. During the same period, the streaming service reported a net quarterly profit of around €274 million from a total revenue of €3.81 billion. This amount represented a gain of around 20% from the profits recorded in the past financial year.
Troubleshooting Spotify
As the Spotify outage persisted and became more widespread, Spotify provided a set of troubleshooting tips that its users could use to try and overcome the issue. This was as it continued investigating the widespread outage, specifically among its U.S. users.
1. The Spotify team recommended uninstalling and reinstalling the app to check whether this would help resolve the issue.
2. Spotify support team suggested switching to a different network to enable users to establish whether the issue would persist.
3. The Spotify users were advised to log out of their accounts and then try to log-in back to see whether this would make a difference.

As Spotify users waited to hear from the support team, this is what some of them said on X (formerly Twitter): "Not playing any music because Spotify keeps buffering. Please fix the issue because I am literally at the gym right now," said one user.
Another user had this to say: “As a person who can’t do a single task without her ultra-specific Spotify playlists, I can’t have Spotify down right now. send help.”
