General Motors (GM) has announced a recall of 461,839 vehicles in the United States due to a transmission defect that could cause the rear wheels to lock up, increasing the risk of a crash.

The recall affects certain models of pickup trucks and SUVs from the 2020 to 2022 model years, including popular vehicles from Chevrolet, GMC, and Cadillac.

Affected Models

The recall includes the following vehicles:

- 2020-2022 Chevrolet Silverado 1500, 2500, and 3500

- 2020-2022 GMC Sierra 1500, 2500, and 3500

- 2021 Cadillac Escalade and Escalade ESV

- 2021 Chevrolet Tahoe and Suburban

- 2021 GMC Yukon and Yukon XL

All affected vehicles are equipped with diesel engines.

The Issue

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has identified the problem as a potential malfunction in the transmission control valve. According to GM, this valve may be susceptible to excessive wear over time, resulting in a gradual loss of pressure within the valve. This can lead to harsh shifting and, in rare cases, cause the rear wheels to experience a momentary lockup.

Drivers may notice rough shifting before any wheel problems occur. In extreme cases, the rear wheel lockup can happen when the transmission downshifts from eighth gear.

Safety Implications

The transmission issue poses a serious safety risk. GM has reported 1,888 instances of wheel lockup potentially related to this condition.

The company has also identified 11 incidents possibly linked to the defect, including vehicles veering off the road and causing minor property damage in some cases.

Three minor injuries have been reported, although GM stated these were not associated with crashes.

GM's Response and Solution

To address this issue, GM will install new transmission control module software in the affected vehicles.

This software update is designed to:

1. Monitor the valve's wear level

2. Detect excess wear approximately 10,000 miles before any potential lockup

3. Limit the transmission to fifth gear if wear is detected, preventing wheel lockup

4. Trigger a "service engine" light and display a reduced power message if a problem is detected[2][3]

GM dealers will perform this software update free of charge. Additionally, the company has introduced a special coverage program for repairing transmissions with faulty control valves.

Recall Timeline and Owner Notification

GM plans to notify owners of affected vehicles starting December 9, 2024. However, vehicle owners can take proactive steps before receiving official notification.

1. Check recall status by entering the Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) on the NHTSA website

2. Contact GM customer service at 1-888-988-7267

3. Reach out to brand-specific customer service lines:

- Cadillac: 1-800-458-8006

- GMC: 1-800-462-8782

- Chevrolet: 1-800-222-1020[2][4]

When contacting GM or dealers about this issue, owners should reference recall number N242454440.

Background and Investigation

The recall comes after a series of events and investigations.

In January 2024, GM discussed an owner complaint about the problem with U.S. safety regulators. And just a few months later in July 2024, GM initiated an investigation into the issue.

Later in September 2024, a GM investigator discovered 1,888 reports of wheel lockup potentially related to the condition.

This recall follows closely on the heels of another GM recall in September 2024, which affected around 450,000 pickups and SUVs in the US due to a faulty low brake fluid warning light.

Industry Context and Impact

This recall is significant in the context of the automotive industry, particularly for GM.

With nearly 462,000 vehicles affected, this recall represents a large portion of GM's recent production, especially considering it targets popular models like the Chevrolet Silverado and GMC Sierra.

While GM has not disclosed the estimated cost of this recall, such large-scale actions typically involve significant expenses for automakers, including the cost of parts, labor for repairs, and potential compensation for affected customers.

Recalls this big can impact consumer trust as well as the reputation of the brand. GM's prompt action and comprehensive solution may help mitigate potential negative effects on its reputation.

Consumer Advice

Owners of the affected vehicles should take the following steps.
