FDA Approves Software To Turn Apple AirPods Into Hearing Aids
The U.S. Food and Drug Administration on Thursday authorized a piece of software that will allow Apple AirPods Pro 2 ear buds to function as hearing aids.
The FDA said it is the approval of Hearing Aid Feature is first authorization of an over-the-counter hearing aid software device. Hearing Aid Feature can be installed on compatible versions of the AirPods Pro and customized to the user's needs, amplifying sounds for those with mild to moderate hearing impairment.
“Hearing loss is a significant public health issue impacting millions of Americans,” Michelle Tarver, M.D., Ph.D., acting director of the FDA's Center for Devices and Radiological Health, said in a statement. “Today’s marketing authorization of an over-the-counter hearing aid software on a widely used consumer audio product is another step that advances the availability, accessibility and acceptability of hearing support for adults with perceived mild to moderate hearing loss.”
According to the FDA, more than 30 million American adults have some degree of hearing loss. Aging, exposure to loud noises, some medical conditions and other factors can contribute to hearing loss, which in turn can negatively affect school or work performance, relationships and emotional well-being. The use of hearing aids has been linked to reduced depression and cognitive decline in older adults.
In 2022, the FDA established over-the-counter hearing aid regulations to allow adults with perceived mild to moderate hearing loss to access hearing aids without the need for a prescription.
