Best Rotisserie Chicken? Costco Just Lost the Title to Sam's Club

For years, Costco’s rotisserie chicken has enjoyed a reputation that's almost impossible to overstate. People rave about it. They even make special trips for it.

Some people seem to leave the warehouse with enough rotisserie chicken to feed a small football team.

That's what makes a new ranking from Consumer Reports so surprising. After evaluating rotisserie chickens from major retailers across the country, Consumer Reports didn't give Costco the top spot.

Instead, the winner was Sam's Club’s rotisserie chicken.

Costco Finally Met Its Match

The ranking compared chickens from ten different retailers, looking at factors like:

  • Flavor

  • Texture

  • Sodium levels

  • Packaging

When the tasting was over, Sam's Club came out on top.

According to Consumer Reports, tasters were particularly impressed by the chicken's:

  • Seasoning

  • Tenderness

  • Overall flavor

Reviewers noted hints of onion, garlic, and paprika, along with a juicy texture that helped it edge out the competition.

Costco still performed well, landing in second place.

So, it’s not exactly a disaster. But, it’s probably enough to start a few spirited debates in warehouse-club Reddit forums.

The Rotisserie Chicken Rivalry Is Real

Few prepared foods have developed the following that rotisserie chickens enjoy.

They're affordable, convenient, and often the answer to the eternal weeknight question: "What's for dinner?" That's why the battle for the best rotisserie chicken is surprisingly competitive.

While Costco's bird has long dominated the conversation, Consumer Reports found strong showings from several other retailers, including:

  • Stop & Shop

  • Walmart

  • Wegmans

  • Whole Foods

Why People Care So Much About Rotisserie Chicken

At first glance, it seems a little funny. It's just chicken. How much debate can one roasted bird generate? Quite a lot, apparently.

Rotisserie chickens have become one of the grocery industry's most popular grab-and-go meals because they offer a rare combination of convenience, value, and versatility.

One chicken can become dinner tonight, sandwiches tomorrow, and soup by the weekend. That's part of the reason stores work so hard to get them right.

In some cases, retailers even use rotisserie chickens as a way to bring shoppers through the door, knowing they'll likely leave with a cart full of other groceries.

Does This Mean Costco's Chicken Is Bad?

Not even close. In fact, Costco's chicken was still one of the highest-rated entries in the entire Consumer Reports rotisserie chicken comparison.

Tasters praised its seasoning and overall quality, even though Sam's Club ultimately earned the top score. If you're already a Costco devotee, there's no reason to abandon ship.

But, if you've never tried Sam's Club's version, you may have a new excuse to conduct a little taste test of your own.

A New King of the Chicken Counter

Every now and then, a long-time champion gets knocked off the podium. This week, that champion just happened to be a rotisserie chicken.

Whether you're loyal to Costco, Sam's Club, or willing to buy whichever bird is still warm when you reach the deli counter, one thing is clear…

The humble grocery store rotisserie chicken is inspiring far more passion than anyone could’ve ever imagined.
