With Father’s Day quickly approaching, you’re probably making plans for the holiday. This day is a great opportunity to let your father, grandfather, or another paternal figure in your life know how much they mean to you. While there are a lot of traditional Mother’s Day celebrations, Father’s Day often gets overlooked in the grand scheme of things, but that doesn’t have to be the case this year.

You may be wondering how to let Dad know how much you love and appreciate him and his presence in your life. Over the years, he’s taught you lessons, loved you, and cared for you. Father’s Day gives you an opportunity to show a bit of appreciation for all of the things that your father figure did in your life.

Maybe you’re wondering how to celebrate the holiday. Perhaps you don’t want to get him another tie that he may or may not ever wear. If so, these unique tips can help you show Dad how important he is to you this Father’s Day.

Study the Family Tree

There are plenty of companies out there that do extensive family tree research. Even if your father has never done one of these himself, he may be interested in taking a deeper dive into his family’s history. Surprising Dad with a family tree is not only a creative idea, but it also gives you a chance to get to know more about your own history. Even if you don’t have the time or resources to pay for a professional family tree study, sit down with your dad and trace your way back through the family lineage. It will give him a chance to think about some of the stories from his own childhood and the stories that he heard from those who came before him.

Work on a Puzzle Together

Working on a jigsaw puzzle is a great way to share some laughs with Dad while also doing something that you can keep as a memento of the day that you spend together. If your dad enjoys working on puzzles, you can get a more challenging puzzle. If it takes more than one day to put it together, it’s just an opportunity for you to spend more time with your father. When the puzzle is complete, purchase a puzzle frame and display the piece.

Put Together a Video

You probably have loads of pictures of you and your dad dating back to your own childhood. While those are a great place to start, try to find some pictures of his childhood and incorporate all of them into a nice video montage. Choose some of your dad’s favorite songs to serve as the background music for the video and watch it together. One of the most appealing parts about this idea is that you can let your dad keep the video to watch anytime he’d like to take a stroll down memory lane.

Put Together a Competition

This idea will work a bit better if you have a large family. Hosting a series of competitions throughout the day is a great way to let Dad get active while creating memories that will last a lifetime. You don’t have to do anything too excessive for this idea to work. Something as simple as some sack races in the backyard, horseshoes, cornhole, and other yard games will work. If you have enough people around, you can break up into teams and keep score. At the end of the day, present the winning team with a prize and Dad with a gift. Although, there’s a pretty good chance that he’ll enjoy the day of laughter more than any present that you can buy him.

Take a Weekend Trip

While Father’s Day always falls on a Sunday, you can always take advantage of the weekend to take a road trip with your dad. Load up the car and go somewhere that he enjoys or somewhere that he’s always wanted to go but just never got around to visiting. Not only can you make memories with your father when you reach your destination, but a road trip provides a great opportunity to connect with him all over again. Turn on some music that Dad enjoys and talk about whatever comes up during the trip.

Take Part in His Favorite Hobby

What does your dad like to do for fun? Depending on his age, he may be retired, which has left him with all sorts of time for exploring new hobbies. Whether it’s woodworking, fishing, or painting, spend the day doing something that he enjoys. Maybe your dad hasn’t really gotten around to picking up any new hobbies because he doesn’t know where to start. If that’s the case, you have the chance to introduce him to something new. This idea not only allows you to spend some quality time with Dad, but it also opens the door for the two of you to find something that you enjoy doing together, even when it’s not Father’s Day.

Plan a Movie Marathon

Over the years, your dad probably watched a lot of movies that he didn’t really care about seeing. That’s just part of parenthood. While you’ll probably never be able to make up for the hours he spent watching the same movies over and over again, Father’s Day is a great opportunity to spend the day watching movies that your dad wants to see. Even if he’s already watched them, sit down and watch them with him. Find out why he likes the movies he likes. Order a pizza, pop some popcorn, and spend the day catching all of your dad’s favorite flicks.

Lend Dad a Hand

Every homeowner has a list of things that they’ve been meaning to get around to doing to their house. Your dad probably has one, too. Whether it’s because he hasn’t had the time, the money, or the ability to complete those tasks on his own, Father’s Day is a great opportunity to help Dad knock off a few of those home improvement items. Obviously, you shouldn’t do anything that’s too far out of the skillets of you and your father, but even if it’s something as simple as a new coat of paint in a room, give your father a hand this Father’s Day. You’ll get to spend the day working with Dad, and you’ll both feel a sense of accomplishment when you’re done.

Give Back

Find out if there are any community groups or charities in your area that need volunteers. If so, join your dad in a day of giving back to others who are less fortunate. This is not only a great way to give back, but if your dad is retired and looking for something to do, a volunteer opportunity can help him find a renewed sense of purpose.

Father’s Day is all about Dad. Taking the day to spend time with him is the best gift that you can give, especially if you’ve stepped into adulthood. It’s a great way to let him know that you appreciate all the sacrifices that he made over the years to help you become the person that you are today.
