Over 500k Ovens Recalled After Fires Lead to Injuries, Pet Deaths
Just this week, LG announced a major recal on their ovens with knobs that are front-mounted. Up to 500,000 ovens are in the line of fire, due to a hazard that has led to property damage, injuries, and even the death of pets.
They’ve become perilous because the knobs can accidentally be turned on, posing a real safety risk. According to the report from the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), at least 86 reports have been filed because the heating elements were activated.
Over 28 Fires
These dangerous ovens have started more than 28 fires. At least five of them were the cause of significant property damage, clocking in at over $340,000. Eight minor injuries have also been reported, mainly burns. And, perhaps worst of all, three of the fires killed people’s pets.
Major Retailers and Online
All of the recalled ovens were sold at big box stores like:
Home Depot
Lowe’s
BestBuy
Costco
Of course, many were also purchased directly from LG.com. The affected ovens can be as old as 10 years because the recall encompasses models available for purchase between 2015 and 2025. Be sure to check LG’s official recall page if you think your oven might be affected. There, you’ll find a full list of the serial numbers and models in question.
Contact LG Right Away
LG is asking everyone who owns an oven on the recall list to reach out to them immediately. They’re available Monday through Friday, from 9 am to 6 pm EST. Alternatively, you can email them at lagrange.recall@lge.com.
They willl send out a free warning label to serve as a reminder to use the control lock function on the oven. For most models, it’s located on the oven panel. Once it’s activated, it’s far more difficult for the oven to be ignited simply because someone bumped into it or a pet jumped up on the oven.
Samsung Did the Same
Just last summer, Samsung had the same issue. However, as it stands today, their recall was far more severe. They had to account for over 1.1 million ovens after nearly 250 fires that broke out, leading to injury and death. Sadly, at least seven pets died.
Prior to that, CPSC also reported on other incidents when an oven was turned on because a knob was bumped. An at-home security camera caught a dog jumping onto the stove, accidentally activating the flames. A nearby box then caught on fire, causing a family in Colorado to lose their home.
Be Mindful of Your Oven
Whether you have front-mounted knobs or not, these massive recalls serve as a reminder that we need to keep an eye on our ovens at all times. If it has a safety feature, make it’s always on, especially when you’re out of the house.
Here at Your Life Buzz, we like to keep our finger on the pulse of important stories like this, especially when time is of the essence. If you have an LG stove, check your make and model against the recall page on their site. And, the next time you fire up your oven, make sure that safety feature always gets turned back on again.
