The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) manages vehicle safety recalls based on agency investigations and validated consumer complaints. All manufacturers also issue vehicle recalls upon discovering potential safety-related defective parts or a defective vehicle, often identified when multiple customers bring their vehicles to their dealership for similar repairs.

Once a potential safety issue is identified, the manufacturer must notify the NHTSA, which oversees the recall process. All cars, trucks and SUVs must meet Federal safety standards, and recalls are only issued when a reasonable safety risk is identified.

Current Vehicle Recalls

The NHTSA issues vehicle safety recalls as necessary, demonstrating a proactive approach to ensuring vehicle safety. This means there may be multiple recalls at any time, but it also means that the NHTSA is constantly monitoring and addressing potential safety hazards it identifies or manufacturers report.

The following are recent recall notices due to defective parts or other issues considered safety hazards, keeping vehicle owners informed and prepared.

2025 Kicks – This is a manufacturer recall for applicable 2025 Nissan Kicks because the certification label may not have the correct information. The Gross Vehicle Weight Rating and the Gross Axle Weight Rating may be misstated on 37,003 Kicks.

Once the vehicle owner of record gets the notification letter mailed on May 12, 2025, a Nissan dealer will install a new certification label for free.

2025 Cadillac LYRIQ - The NHTSA issued a recall for any 2025 Cadillac LYRIQ with inaccurate manufacturing information concerning the rear outboard head restraints in the owner’s manual.

The wrong information creates a safety risk because vehicle occupants using the manual may not understand how to adjust the head restraints. This can increase the risk of injury in the event of a crash. General Motors will mail free corrected information as owner manual inserts after May 12, 2025, when notification letters are sent. There are 10,643 vehicles with this issue. (NHTSA Recall No: 25V-193)

2018-2020 Ford Expedition and 2018-2020 Lincoln Navigator – The Ford recall involves the driver and front passenger seatbelt retractor pretensioners. They should tighten only during a collision, but may deploy (tighten) inadvertently on 105,322 affected vehicles. The cause is identified as oxidation corroding a squib pin and bridge-wiring weld, triggering erroneous diagnostic codes. (NHTSA Recall No.: 25V-197)

2024-2025 F-150, Expedition and 2024 Lincoln Navigator – Ford recalled these vehicles if they have the 3.5-liter GTDI engine, for a potentially misaligned engine cup plug that may cause a rapid oil leak. Vehicle owners will be notified by a letter mailed May 26, 2025. The dealer will inspect the engine cup plug alignment. It will be replaced for free, if necessary.

Eight BMW models recalled – BMW is issuing a manufacturer recall for eight BMW models, accounting for 4,397 vehicles, on May 23, 2025. The safety issue is that an electrical connection between the battery and the starter-generator may come loose.

The dealer will replace the parts as necessary for no charge. The models included in the recall are the following.

o X3 30 xDrive
o 4 Series Convertible (430i, 430i xDrive)

Proactively Checking for Recalls

Before buying a vehicle, do a recall lookup by VIN. The NHTSA has an online search tool at https://vinrcl.safercar.gov/vin/ that enables anyone to search recalls by VIN. The search tool will report if a vehicle has not been repaired as required by a safety call issued within the last 15 years. Keep in mind that the very recently announced safety recalls may not be included yet in the recall hookup by VIN because not all the VINs have been identified yet.

Using this too, current or potential vehicle owners can check a VIN number for recalls and recalls of car seats, tires and equipment. Vehicle owners are encouraged to check for recall alerts periodically because sometimes they are missed, i.e., a mailed manufacturer’s recall notice is sent to the wrong address. There are three more easy ways to check for vehicle safety recalls.

• The NHTSA now offers the free SaferCar app. The vehicle owner enters the vehicle identification or equipment, and recall alerts are sent to the smartphone. There is also an option to sign up to receive general recall alerts through email.
• Another option is to visit www.Recalls.gov, which six federal agencies created and has links to relevant vehicle and equipment recall websites. Choose the ‘motor vehicles’ tab and then ‘motor vehicle recalls’ to visit the NHTSA recalls website. Choose ‘recalls by manufacturer’ to go to the detailed listing of NHTSA Recalls by the top 12 vehicle manufacturers.
• Each manufacturer's main website also has specific recall information.

Stay Informed on Vehicle Recalls

Since vehicle recalls are for issues that present safety hazards, consumers are urged to follow up on NHTSA and manufacturer recalls. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration data reports that approximately 70% of recalled vehicles are repaired, meaning millions of vehicles are on the road with compromised safety. Ignoring a recall puts the vehicle passengers and other drivers in potential danger. There are also potential legal issues should a recalled vehicle left unrepaired be involved in an accident.
