Keeping your home organized is a great way to reduce stress and improve your productivity. Multiple studies indicate that people who deal with a cluttered home struggle to get quality rest and often find themselves struggling to get things done when they go to work.

Unfortunately, many people feel like organizing their homes is just too big of a job or that things are simply “too far gone” for them to bounce back from. That’s not the case at all.

Today, if you’re interested in organizing your home, these organization tips can help you turn your home into the relaxing, tidy space that you want it to be.

Take a Room-by-Room Approach

One of the biggest mistakes that people make when decluttering their home is to look at the entire property as a whole. That’s how they end up so overwhelmed by the amount of stuff they own and the cluttered condition it’s in, resulting in them giving up and walking away from the project, resulting in them living in their clutter.

With this in mind, it’s a good idea to declutter your home one room at a time. Taking a methodical approach not only helps you avoid getting overwhelmed by the project but also helps you create space throughout your home.

While the goal certainly isn’t to fill those empty spaces with items that you’re decluttering, having space to move around and putting items temporarily for organizing will help streamline the process.

When you see progress, you’ll be more likely to stick with the project. Consider starting with the least cluttered areas of your home to refine your process before you get to the most cluttered rooms.

The Three-Pile Approach

Even if you’re not a full-blown hoarder, the approach that’s used when helping hoarders declutter their homes can be useful to you. Most experts encourage anyone who is organizing their home to create three separate piles for every item to fall into.

Make a pile of things you’re going to keep, a pile of things that you’re going to throw away, and a third pile of things that you plan on donating.

Go through every space in your home and decide which pile every item falls into. It can be hard, but part of organizing your home involves letting go of things that you may have been holding onto for years. If the item is no longer functional or no longer meets a need in your home, be willing to let it go.

This doesn’t mean that you have to get rid of everything you own that holds any type of sentimental value, but it does mean that you don’t keep things just for the sake of keeping them. Tell yourself that passing some of your items on to others who can use them is a great way to extend the life of the item.

If you have the time to invest and live in an area where it can be successful, consider having a garage sale. Sometimes, it’s more enjoyable to turn those unused items into cash that you can use to treat yourself to a nice weekend trip. Think about all of your options and organize your belongings accordingly.

Invest in Some Storage Solutions

One of the reasons that your home is currently cluttered is probably because you don’t have adequate storage solutions on hand. Storage bins, totes, and baskets are usually stackable and can hold plenty of items while keeping them out of the way.

You should also consider implementing some vertical storage solutions to help cut down on the amount of floor space that you’re using to hold items, especially those that you don’t use on a daily basis.

Shelves that mount to the wall, peg boards, and hangers are wonderful tools that can help you keep your clutter to a minimum. Evaluate every area of your home and decide what type of storage solutions are best for each space.

Establish a Schedule

Your house did not get cluttered in a single day, and you’re not going to declutter it in 24 hours. However, if you are going to keep the clutter down, you’re going to need to commit to a regular cleaning and maintenance schedule. Your home can get re-cluttered faster than you can declutter it regularly, which is incredibly frustrating.

Consider adopting the one-in-one-out rule. This rule, used by professional organizers around the world, says that for every item you bring into your home, you take one item out, ideally in the same area.

For instance, if your closet is already crowded, consider getting rid of a shirt you haven’t worn in a while every time you buy a new shirt. This helps you cut down on clutter by ensuring that you don’t have more items on hand than you can possibly use.

Consider Multi-Purpose Items

Finally, look for opportunities to upgrade your home with multipurpose furniture items. When decluttering your home, there are some items that you can’t get rid of.

For instance, you have to have living room furniture. However, you can invest in furniture that offers storage solutions to help you cut down on your clutter.

For instance, consider buying a coffee table that has storage built in, whether it’s through drawers or a top that raises so you can put items inside. When you have storage built into your tables, you can cut down on the amount of stuff that you put on their surfaces without removing them from your home completely.
