A nationwide health scare has unfolded as BrucePac, a Woodburn, Oregon-based company, initiates a massive recall of nearly 10 million pounds of ready-to-eat (RTE) meat and poultry products due to possible Listeria monocytogenes contamination.

This alarming development underscores the importance of food safety and consumer vigilance.

What is Listeria?

Listeria monocytogenes, often shortened to Listeria, is a bacterium that can cause the foodborne illness Listeriosis.

While Listeriosis is relatively uncommon, it can be severe, particularly for pregnant women, newborns, older adults, and individuals with weakened immune systems.

Symptoms of Listeriosis can include fever, muscle aches, headache, nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea. In severe cases, it can lead to meningitis, bloodstream infections, and even death.

The Source of the Contamination

The potential contamination was discovered during routine product testing by the United States Department of Agriculture's Food Safety and Inspection Service (USDA FSIS).

Samples of BrucePac chicken tested positive for Listeria monocytogenes, prompting an immediate investigation. The investigation identified BrucePac RTE chicken as the source of the contamination within the recalled products.

What's Recalled?

The recall encompasses a vast range of RTE meat and poultry products produced by BrucePac between May 31st and October 8th, 2024.

The products were shipped to warehouses and distributors nationwide, ultimately reaching grocery stores, restaurants, schools, and institutions.

Unfortunately, a complete list of recalled items hasn't been released yet, but the USDA FSIS advises consumers to be cautious.

If you have RTE meat or poultry products from BrucePac in your refrigerator or pantry, here's how to determine if they're part of the recall:

  • Look for establishment numbers: The recalled products will have "establishment numbers 51205 or P-51205" located inside or under the USDA mark of inspection.

  • Check production dates: The recalled products were manufactured between May 31st and October 8th, 2024.

  • Contact BrucePac: If you're unsure about a product, it's best to contact BrucePac directly at 503-874-3000.

Protecting Yourself from Listeria

If you have a recalled product, do not consume it. The USDA FSIS recommends throwing the product away or returning it to the place of purchase. Thoroughly clean and disinfect any surfaces that may have come into contact with the recalled product.

Here are some additional tips to protect yourself from foodborne illness:

  • Always cook meat and poultry to the proper internal temperature.

  • Practice good hygiene in the kitchen.

  • Refrigerate leftovers promptly.

  • Clean and sanitize cutting boards and utensils after each use.
