A major discount supermarket chain is urging consumers in five states to check their refrigerator after issuing a recall on green peppers, jalapeños, and green beans over concerns about potential Listeria monocytogenes contamination.

The potentially harmful bacteria can cause serious illness, particularly in vulnerable populations like pregnant women, young children, and older adults.

The Recall Details

  • Products Recalled: Freshly-packaged green peppers (including bell peppers), jalapeños, and green beans.

  • Brand: "Freshire Farms" label

  • Affected States: Kentucky, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania, and West Virginia

  • Reason for Recall: Potential Listeria monocytogenes contamination

The recall announcement came from Aldi, a national discount grocery chain known for its low prices and private-label brands.

The company stated they initiated the recall "in cooperation with Wiers Farm, Inc. and R.S. Hanline Co Inc. and out of an abundance of caution." Aldi emphasized their commitment to customer safety and the integrity of the products they sell.

What is Listeria and Why is it a Concern?

Listeria monocytogenes, commonly referred to as Listeria, is a bacterium that can cause a serious infection known as Listeriosis.

While healthy adults may experience mild flu-like symptoms, Listeria can be particularly dangerous for pregnant women, newborns, older adults, and people with weakened immune systems.

The infection can cause fever, muscle aches, headaches, nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea. In more severe cases, Listeriosis can lead to miscarriage, stillbirth, meningitis, or even death.

What Should Consumers Do?

If you have purchased any "Freshire Farms" green peppers, jalapeños, or green beans in the affected states, Aldi urges you to take these steps:

  • Do not eat the produce.

  • Throw them away immediately.

  • Return the products to your local Aldi store for a full refund.

  • Sanitize any surfaces or containers that may have come into contact with the recalled products.

  • Consult your doctor if you have consumed any of the recalled products and are experiencing any symptoms of Listeriosis.

Practicing Food Safety

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommends following these general food safety tips to prevent Listeria infection:

  • Keep your refrigerator at 40°F (4°C) or below.

  • Clean and sanitize cutting boards, utensils, and countertops after handling raw produce.

  • Wash your hands thoroughly with soap and water for at least 20 seconds before and after handling food.

  • Cook raw meat to a safe internal temperature.

  • Separate raw meat from other foods in your shopping cart and refrigerator.

  • Eat refrigerated leftovers within 3-4 days.

  • Pregnant women, older adults, and people with weakened immune systems should be especially cautious with raw produce and unpasteurized dairy products.
