New McDonald's Chain, CosMc's to Be the Next Big Competitor for Dunkin and Starbucks

Coffee lovers have plenty of options when it comes to choosing which chain to buy their morning drink from, and now they're going to have one more. While Dunkin and Starbucks are big players in the coffee and breakfast game, there's one fast food chain that trumps both of them when it comes to revenue.

In 2022, McDonald's generated just over 23 billion U.S. dollars worldwide. Just in the United States, the popular fast food chain generated $9.42 billion, which was the highest portion of revenue, according to Statista. Although McDonald's may be the leader in the fast food world, there are plenty of other chains to compete with when it comes to morning and afternoon sales - and that's exactly what they plan to do.

While you may be used to grabbing your favorite coffee at one of the bigger names in the coffee game, McDonald's new chain, CosMc's, may make you change your mind.

What is CosMc's?

Although McDonald's might have basic coffee to get you through the morning or their take on a Frappuccino, the Frappé, they're no match for what coffee chains like Starbucks can offer. Because of this, they were looking for a way to boost their revenue during the slower afternoon hours, according to McDonald's CEO, Chris Kempczinski.

That's when the idea for CosMc's was born. This new chain will be able to create and serve customized drinks that is hard for McDonald's locations to make. The concept for CosMc's according to Kempczinski is, "what would happen if a McDonald's character from the 1980s that was part alien, part surfer, part robot" opened a restaurant.

While this answer may seem a bit vague and confusing, the best way to find out more about what the new fast food chain will offer is to take a look at the menu.

What's on the CosMc's Menu?

Just like your favorite coffee chains, CosMc's will have customizable drinks on their menu, along with breakfast sandwiches, snacks, desserts, and more. CosMc's will also offer other beverages other than coffee, such as energy drinks and tea. Customers will be able to customize their drinks with add-ons like boba, flavored syrups, and energy and Vitamin C shots.

According to the Chicago Sun-Times, some of the prices include: $5.79 for the Churro Frappé and $4.89 for the Tumeric Spiced Latte. These prices come in slightly less expensive than Starbucks, whose 16-oz drinks will cost you about $5.95.

Along with customizable drinks, CosMc's will also offer a food menu with various sweet and savory items to choose from, including a fan favorite Egg McMuffin Sandwich and the M&M's McFlurry, both of which you can get at McDonald's.

CosMc's Locations

The very first CosMc's location opened on Thursday, December 7th in a suburb in Chicago - Bolingbrook, Illinois on Weber Road. This location makes sense for a pilot chain as McDonald's headquarters are located in Chicago, IL. Several cars waited in the drive thru line since the lobby was not open yet, with one customer even claiming he had waited in line for 3 hours.

In 2024, 10 more locations are expected to open in Texas, said Kempczinski. While the company has yet to declare whether more locations will expand upon Texas and Illinois, it seems they'll wait and see how sales do before deciding.

Along with a new chain with new food and drink items, CosMc's also plans to test new technology that would help manage the drive thru line based on customers' orders.

Besides CosMc's, McDonald's also has plans to open around 10,000 new stores around the world by 2027.
