For longtime Chicago Fire fans, Firehouse 51 is about to feel a little different. Joe Miñoso, who has played firefighter Joe Cruz since the series premiered in 2012, is officially leaving the hit NBC drama after 15 seasons.
The good news? This isn't a sudden goodbye. Viewers will still see Joe in the opening episodes of Chicago Fire Season 15 as his story comes to an end.
Joe Cruz Will Get a Proper Goodbye
Fortunately, Joe won't simply disappear between seasons. It seems he'll return for several early episodes before he leaves the series. That gives the writers a chance to wrap up one of the show's longest-running storylines, instead of leaving fans with unanswered questions. Exactly how Cruz's story ends is still being kept under wraps.
The Season 14 finale left plenty of material for the writers to work with. In that episode, Cruz and his wife learned they were expecting twins, only for the finale to end with multiple Firehouse 51 members, including Cruz, trapped inside a burning building with their fates unknown. Given that Cruz is expected to return for a handful of Season 15 episodes, it seems unlikely his exit will involve his character's death, though how the writers choose to send him off remains a mystery for now.
An Original Favorite From Day One
Even if you don't remember every fire or rescue, chances are you remember Joe Cruz. Over the years, he became one of the heartbeats of Firehouse 51, balancing intense rescues with humor, loyalty and plenty of memorable personal moments. Fans watched him grow from a young firefighter into a husband, father, inventor of the Slamigan, and one of the station's most dependable team members.
Miñoso first appeared as a guest star in the show's pilot episode before being promoted to series regular starting in Season 2. His exit leaves just three original cast members still standing: Taylor Kinney and David Eigenberg, who have been series regulars since day one, and Christian Stolte, who, like Miñoso, started as a recurring player in the first season before becoming a regular.
That's a big reason why his departure feels like the end of an era.
Chicago Fire Season 15 Is Bringing Big Changes
Joe's exit is just one of several shakeups coming to Chicago Fire in Season 15.
The new season will premiere on Oct. 7 as it introduces a new firefighter, Marcus Burke, played by Da'Vinchi. Behind the scenes, Victor Teran will also take over as showrunner, replacing Andrea Newman after 14 seasons at the helm, as the series continues to evolve after more than a decade on the air.
Meanwhile, Taylor Kinney, Miranda Rae Mayo, David Eigenberg and Christian Stolte are all expected to return.
