Coca-Cola has resulted in a nationwide recall of a specific variety of Minute Maid Lemonade. The recall, initiated on September 10th, 2024, affects 13,152 cases of 12-can cartons labeled as "Minute Maid Zero Sugar Lemonade."

However, upon closer inspection, the cans themselves contain regular Minute Maid Lemonade, which does contain sugar.

Reason For the Recall

The issue lies in the discrepancy between the carton labeling and the individual can labels. The 12-pack cartons are labeled "Minute Maid Zero Sugar Lemonade," leading consumers to believe they are purchasing a sugar-free option.

Unfortunately, the cans inside contain regular Minute Maid Lemonade, which boasts a significant amount of sugar.

While many consumers may simply overlook the discrepancy and consume the product as intended, this mislabeling poses a potential health risk for specific groups of people.

People with diabetes, pre-diabetes, or those who strictly monitor their sugar intake could be significantly impacted by unknowingly consuming a sugar-laden beverage.

The Recalled Product

If you have a carton of Minute Maid Zero Sugar Lemonade sitting in your fridge, here's how to know if it's part of the recall:

  • Look for the following information:

    • UPC code: 0 25000 12115 9

    • Phrase: "CANNED UNDER THE AUTHORITY OF THE COCA-COLA COMPANY, ATLANTA, GA" printed on the carton

    • Product Quantity: 13,152 cs/12 cartons/12/12 oz cans

    • Code Information: FEB1725CNA and FEB1725CNB

What to Do

If you find a carton matching this description, it's important to refrain from consuming the product. Coca-Cola urges consumers to discard the recalled lemonade or return it to the place of purchase for a full refund.

While the exact cause of the mislabeling remains under investigation, it's likely a production line error resulted in regular Minute Maid Lemonade cans being mistakenly placed into cartons labeled for the sugar-free version.

While the immediate focus is on consumer safety and product recall, there may be potential legal implications for Coca-Cola. Consumers who unknowingly consumed the regular lemonade due to the mislabeling could potentially file lawsuits alleging negligence or false advertising.

Consumers can play a vital role in ensuring food safety by staying informed about current recalls through resources like the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) website and signing up for email alerts from specific brands they trust.

Additionally, paying close attention to product labels and discarding any items that appear mislabeled is crucial.
