10 Best New Shows to Stream in 2024
It’s a new year and we have a lot of exciting things on our plate. There are new adventures to be had and new projects to take on.
In contrast to other years, this is also going to be the year that we stick to our resolutions.
In spite of all that, there will still be quiet moments to unwind and hunker down at home. During those times, if you’re wondering what to watch, here are the 10 best new shows to stream in 2024.
1. The Gilded Age
Downton Abbey belongs on every list of shows to stream, right? The showrunners knew how to go out on a high note and quit while they were ahead.
Still, it left a major hole in our hearts when they drew the final curtain. With only six seasons to watch and rewatch, it’s not something we can revisit all the time.
In its place, you might find yourself equally enamored by The Gilded Age. It’s a luxurious series with all the Downton bells and whistles. It follows the story of a young woman trying to survive the rigid New York City high life in the late 1800s.
Cynthia Nixon has a starring role in this series, as well. So, now you’re crossing Downton Abbey with Sex and the City in the most glorious way. You’ll need HBO Max to enjoy this delight. But, you’ll be oh-so-glad you re-upped your subscription!
2. The Morning Show
Who knew Jennifer Aniston and Reese Witherspoon would step out of the big screen and into our weekly television schedules? It’s a delightful turn of events that’s up there with Big Little Lies, which was another series Reese Witherspoon took to new heights.
The cast here is incredible, as if Jennifer Aniston and Reese Witherspoon weren’t enough. You’ve also got Billy Crudup, Julianna Magulies, Steve Carrell, and Mark Duplass.
With all those heavy-hitters, they’re able to take a somewhat basic storyline – following the lives of broadcasters – and turn it into an edge-of-your seat kind of affair.
This Morning Show is on Apple TV+. So, if you can rationalize a subscription there and use it to enjoy a few additional series, this is well worth the subscription plan.
3. Silo
If you enjoy fantasy shows, movies, and books, you’ll quickly see why Silo is on the list of most popular TV shows right now. It’s set in a dystopian future and focuses on an underground community that lives in a 144-level silo. Sounds pretty out there, right?
When you team up actors like Rebecca Ferguson (yes, Tom Cruise’s Mission Impossible femme fatale), Tim Robbins, and Iain Glen (a la Game of Thrones), the sky’s the limit – even for a dystopian underground community.
This show is also available on Apple TV+, truly making that new sub worthwhile. And if you pair up the Morning Show and Silo, you can enter two completely alternate universes, all from the comfort of your own home.
4. The Summer I Turned Pretty
This name might ring a distant bell in your mind, even if you’ve never searched the show. It’s based on an enormously popular YA book that has gained just as much traction on the small screen.
This series can be found on Amazon Prime Video, which is the home of several other heavy-hitters like Poldark and The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel.
You might not recognize some of the names of the stars of this show. But, in a way, that can be equally exciting, as you won’t come to the series with any typecasts in mind.
5. The Real Housewives of…
Pick a series! If you want some silly, nonsensical fun to turn off your mind, pick a Real Housewives Series.
Beverly Hills and New York are some of the most talked-about series. But, The Real Housewives of Salt Lake City offers a surprising shock of drama for a pack of former Mormons.
Many of the women are facing new lives as they step out of a lifetime within a church that they found constricting. Now, they’re out there on the streets of Salt Lake City, turning up the heat, bringing the drama to new business ventures, and drinking just a tad too many cocktails at house parties.
For something silly that’s not quite as carefully curated as The Gilded Age or Silo, pick a Real Housewives series to tune into and tune out the world.
6. Poker Face
Speaking of a world away, how about a series that follows a casino worker on the run who ends up entangled in a series of debacles, including the mysterious deaths of the strangers she meets along the way?
The lead, Natasha Lyonne, is quite funny and pulls off this quirky series with aplomb. It’s not easy to combine the genres of murder mystery, crime, and comedy, but Lyonne nails it.
This series can be found on Peacock, which also offers a lot of free options once you get your toes wet in this up-and-coming platform.
7. Fellow Travelers
Fans of Matt Bomer will want to follow him to this series. We couldn’t get enough of him in White Collar or Magic Mike, and the same holds true for Fellow Travelers.
It’s based on the 2007 novel by Thomas Mallon and translates beautifully onto the small screen. Showtime knows how to turn novels into alluring TV series; we saw that with Big Little Liars and we see it again with Fellow Travelers.
If you haven’t read the book, it follows the lives of two men who embarked on a decades-long affair. They met during the height of McCarthyism in the 1950s so, needless to say, it was quite taboo and that’s what makes this all the more thrilling.
Be careful, though. You must prepare your heart because this is only a miniseries and not something that will roll on for five or ten seasons. Although that makes it one of the best TV shows to binge watch, when it’s over, it’s over!
8. The Crown
Back to the Downton lovers in the house. Downton lovers were an easy sell when this series kicked off. It’s beautifully curated with a fantastic cast, award-winning music, and show-stopping sets.
The series wrapped at the end of 2023, but it’s never too late to start binge-watching, or re-watching The Crown. It follows the lives of the royals, from Queen Elizabeth II’s marriage to Prince Phillip, all the way up to Diana’s death in the 1990s.
Netflix has put out some fantastic series, and The Crown does not disappoint. It’s often found on the lists of best TV shows on Netflix right now. The cinematography is worthy of the silver screen and it manages to take some fairly mundane moments in history into edge-of-your seat scenarios.
9. The Diplomat
Returning to the thriller genre, this is another alluring series with two people who pull it off very well: Keri Russell and Rufus Sewell.
Sewell often plays a naughty, naughty boy and he doesn’t disappoint. In this series, he doesn’t exactly play a “bad” guy, but he is suffering through some dark times, like his current lack of a posting in the US embassy.
If you enjoy series with a little bit of a political bent, you’ll enjoy following Keri Russeel in her role as newly-appointed US ambassador to the UK. She struggles to keep her marriage and career intact, and takes viewers along for the ride.
10. Succession
Like The Crown, Succession wrapped in 2023. But, if you don’t like the idea of waiting for a new episode to drop every week, this is certainly something you’ll want to snuggle into on the weekends.
This is another HBO masterpiece that’s loosely based on the life of Rupert Murdaugh. It delves into the strained family ties of an absurdly wealthy family run by a man with an honest-to-goodness God complex.
Each one of his kids are eager to win over daddy’s affections, which are truly hard-won. The eldest son faces a mountain of problems, from feelings of inferiority, to drug and alcohol addiction, to divorce, to the deep-seeded yearning to wear the crown.
His siblings are in hot pursuit and, boy, do they give him a run for his money. Kieran Culkin really makes a name for himself in this series with his genuine and true, “I don’t give a you-know-what attitude.
All throughout the high drama this series offers, you’ll enjoy gorgeous cinematography, countless twists and turns, and a cast that’s up for so many Golden Globes, you’ll quickly see why.
