A North Carolina man has been charged with first-degree murder and kidnapping after a U.S. Postal Service rural mail carrier was shot and killed while delivering mail in Wilkes County on June 26, leaving behind two young daughters who had already lost their father just six months earlier.

Brandi Reynolds, 35, was found dead on Montieth Acres Road in the small community of Hays after authorities received a call for help at approximately 4:16 p.m. The North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation confirmed she was on her mail route when the incident occurred. William Craig Durham, 56, of Roaring River, was arrested the same day and charged with first-degree kidnapping and murder. He was ordered held without bond and remained in the Wilkes County Jail as of Tuesday.

What Investigators Found

Court records and arrest reports indicate Durham restrained Reynolds and removed her from one location to another before killing her. She was shot during the attack. The Wilkes County Sheriff's Office, the U.S. Postal Inspection Service and the North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation are all participating in the ongoing investigation.

"I can confirm that Brandi Reynolds was delivering mail on her route when the incident occurred," U.S. Postal Inspector Michael Martel said in a statement. Investigators are working to determine whether any prior connection existed between Durham and Reynolds.

State prison records indicate Durham had previously served time for multiple felony offenses, including second-degree kidnapping, possession of a firearm by a convicted felon and assault on a female.

A Family Left Behind

Reynolds' death has compounded a grief her two daughters had barely begun to process. Her husband, Brent Reynolds, died on Dec. 23, 2025, when the pickup truck he was driving left the roadway in Ronda, North Carolina, and struck a tree. His obituary described his daughters as "the light of his life." Brandi Reynolds' obituary, published this week, described her daughters as "her whole world."

Reynolds is also survived by her mother, two sisters and several nieces and nephews.

Neighbors told local media they loved Reynolds and that she was a dedicated carrier who went above and beyond, often bringing packages directly to residents' doors rather than leaving them at the road.

The USPS Response

"The U.S. Postal Service is deeply saddened about the death of our colleague, Brandi Byrd Reynolds," USPS spokesperson Martha Johnson said. "We extend our heartfelt sympathies to her family, friends, and co-workers at the Hays Post Office."

Crimes committed against postal workers while they are performing their official duties are treated as federal offenses and investigated by the U.S. Postal Inspection Service in addition to local and state authorities. If convicted of first-degree murder in North Carolina, Durham could face life in prison without the possibility of parole.
