USPS Reveals 2026 Christmas Shipping Deadlines
The holidays may still be a few months away, but the USPS is already helping us get our Christmas lists in order.
They’ve released their recommended USPS holiday shipping deadlines for 2026, including the last dates to send cards and packages for delivery before December 25th.
Most of us still have plenty of time to shop, wrap, and find the gift tags we swear we bought last year. But, if you're mailing gifts across the country or around the world, there are a few dates to add to the calendar now.
Mark These December Dates
For packages and cards traveling within the lower 48 states, we have until mid-December before the holiday clock starts ticking.
According to the USPS holiday shipping deadlines, you should send your items by:
December 17: USPS Ground Advantage
December 17: First-Class Mail
December 18: Priority Mail
December 19: Priority Mail Express
These holiday shipping dates are recommendations for deliveries before December 25th, rather than absolute guarantees. The USPS says delivery times can vary, depending on:
Where a package starts
Where it's headed
When the Post Office accepts it
Other conditions
In other words, December 19th isn't the day to discover your inner optimist.
Shipping to Alaska, Hawaii, Puerto Rico, and U.S. Territories
You should get your Ground Advantage packages out by December 16th if your gifts are traveling to:
Alaska
Hawaii
Puerto Rico
A U.S. territory
The remaining Christmas shipping deadlines are similar to the lower 48:
December 17: First-Class Mail
December 18: Priority Mail
December 19: Priority Mail Express
Shipping Internationally and to Military Addresses
If you’re sending something overseas, that’s where your holiday calendar will need a little more breathing room.
For international packages, USPS says you should get your First-Class Package International and Priority Mail International shipments out by December 9th for the following destinations:
Africa
Asia
Australia and New Zealand
Canada
Caribbean
Central and South America
Europe
Mexico
Middle East
Priority Mail Express International will buy you another week, with a recommended send-by date of December 16th.
Military mail may require an even earlier trip to the Post Office.
Depending on the service and destination, some recommended send-by dates will begin as early as November 4th.
Hanukkah Comes Early This Year
There's another date to circle on our calendars. Hanukkah runs from December 4th through December 12th this year. So, if you’re mailing gifts for the holiday, you’ll need to adjust accordingly.
The USPS has the simplest advice of the season: the earlier you send everything, the better.
That’s not exactly groundbreaking, but, if you’ve ever stood in a packed Post Office clutching a box on December 22nd, you’ll know that’s solid advice.
Give Yourself the Gift of Not Panicking
There's plenty of holiday chaos we can't prevent. Someone will burn a batch of cookies. A strand of lights will stop working the moment it reaches the tree. And at least one present will require batteries nobody remembered to buy.
Our packages don't have to join the festivities. Keep these USPS Christmas shipping deadlines handy, ship a little earlier than usual, and enjoy the deeply satisfying knowledge that your gifts are already traveling toward the people you love.
Then pour the hot cocoa. You’ve earned it.
