Production on "The Batman Part II" has been put on hold after director Matt Reeves stepped away to deal with a family matter, DC Studios confirmed.

The pause hits one of Hollywood's most anticipated sequels just a few months into filming, and it adds another chapter to a project that has already faced years of delays.

What DC Studios Said

The studio released a short statement confirming the pause but offering few details.

"Production on The Batman Part II has been temporarily paused while Matt Reeves focuses on a family matter. Matt has the full support of DC Studios, and we look forward to continuing the journey soon," the statement read, according to The A.V. Club.

The studio did not say how long the break will last or share any details about the family matter. Reeves has not commented publicly.

Fan reaction on social media has been largely supportive, with many saying Reeves' well-being matters more than the shooting schedule, SuperHeroHype reported.

Will the Release Date Change?

Cameras started rolling in July, and filming was underway in London when production stopped. That start date was itself later than expected. In early 2025, Pattinson said he hoped the sequel would begin filming by the end of that year.

The movie is currently scheduled to hit theaters on February 18, 2028. Sources say it is too early to know whether the pause will push that date back.

The sequel has already been delayed several times since the first film's release. It was first expected in 2025, then moved to October 2026, and later to October 2027 before landing on its current February 2028 date. The 2023 Hollywood strikes and a lengthy script-writing process both slowed things down. DC Studios co-chief James Gunn has previously asked fans to be patient as Reeves works on the film.

Reeves co-wrote the screenplay with Mattson Tomlin and finished the script in June 2025, according to ScreenCrush. Gunn said at the time that he had read it and called it excellent.

A Star-Studded Cast

Robert Pattinson returns as Bruce Wayne, the role he first played in 2022's "The Batman." The actor also has a new film in theaters, with his A24 movie "Primetime" opening to $19 million at the box office.

Andy Serkis is back as Alfred and Colin Farrell returns as the Penguin, a character he also played in HBO's 2024 spinoff series "The Penguin," which became a hit for the network. Jayme Lawson is also returning.

New additions to the cast include Scarlett Johansson, Sebastian Stan, Brian Tyree Henry and Charles Dance. Plot details remain under wraps, and the studio has not said which villains Batman will face this time.

A Turbulent Time for Warner Bros.

The pause comes during a period of major change for the studio behind the film. Warner Bros. is now part of Skydance after Paramount completed its Warner Bros. Discovery deal on Tuesday, creating one of the largest media companies in the world.

The studio has also had a rough few months at the box office. DC's "Supergirl" underperformed this summer, and Tom Cruise's "Digger" has also struggled in theaters.

"The Batman," released in 2022, was a major hit for the studio, earning more than $772 million worldwide. It launched a new take on the Caped Crusader that is separate from the main DC film universe Gunn is building. That success makes the sequel one of the studio's most important projects.
