Taylor Farms Recalls Salsa and Guacamole Amid Salmonella Outbreak
Taylor Farms has recalled a wide range of prepared foods containing jalapeños, including salsas, guacamole and dips, as the multistate salmonella outbreak tied to Mexican-grown peppers continues to expand across the country.
The California-based supplier announced the voluntary recall Sunday, Aug. 9, after being notified that Coast Citrus Distributors was recalling its fresh jalapeños over potential salmonella contamination. "A grower in Sinaloa, Mexico, that supplies to Coast Citrus Distributors was identified as the potential source in this outbreak," Taylor Farms said in a statement. "Taylor Fresh Foods is no longer sourcing products from this farmer and will be filling orders from alternative suppliers."
The recalled products were distributed to retail distribution centers across 26 states, including Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Illinois, New York, Ohio, Texas and Wisconsin, and carry "best if used by" dates through Aug. 16, 2026. Affected retailers include Walmart, Target, Kroger, Whole Foods, Trader Joe's, Hannaford and Stop & Shop.
A Fast-Growing Outbreak
The CDC and FDA are investigating the outbreak, which has sickened at least 345 people across 27 states and led to 36 hospitalizations so far. Investigators have identified Chipotle Mexican Grill and Qdoba as restaurant chains that received jalapeños imported by Coast Citrus Distributors; both chains have since stopped using the peppers, and Coast Citrus has recalled its remaining product and notified customers.
Taylor Farms said it is not aware of any illnesses reported in connection with its recalled prepared foods specifically. Salmonella infections typically cause diarrhea, fever and stomach cramps, and can be especially severe for young children, older adults and people with weakened immune systems.
A Second Major Recall in Weeks
This marks the second significant foodborne illness recall tied to Taylor Farms in recent weeks. The company, one of North America's largest producers of salads and fresh-cut vegetables and a key supplier to chains including McDonald's and Chipotle, had already recalled iceberg lettuce earlier this summer due to a separate cyclospora outbreak, one that has become among the largest foodborne illness events in recent U.S. history.
Separately, Trader Joe's said it is recalling 668 packages of its fiesta salad with shrimp, since the product contains salsa that may have been made with the recalled jalapeños. The retailer advised customers to discard the product or return it to any Trader Joe's location for a refund.
What Shoppers Should Do
Walmart confirmed it has pulled the affected products from stores and blocked their sale at registers and online. "When notified of recalls, we move swiftly to remove the impacted products from our stores and implement a sales block at our registers and online," the company said in a statement. "We are working closely with our supplier, and customers who have this should discontinue use."
Taylor Farms is urging anyone with the recalled items to throw them away rather than attempt to return them for a refund at the original point of sale, noting that refunds are available at the retailer where the product was purchased. Consumers are advised to check packaging for the affected best-by dates and discard any matching products immediately.
