Sexual Assault Case Against 'Trailer Park Boys' Star Mike Smith Dismissed
A sexual assault charge against "Trailer Park Boys" actor Mike Smith has been dismissed after the complainant in the case decided not to testify.
Judge Jill Hartlen of Nova Scotia provincial court dismissed the case in Dartmouth on Thursday, October 1, ending legal proceedings that began nearly a year ago. Smith, best known for playing the lovable, bespectacled Bubbles on the long-running Canadian comedy, had pleaded not guilty.
Why the Case Was Dismissed
The trial was expected to hinge on the complainant's testimony. When she declined to take the stand, the Crown prosecutor told the court there was no longer a realistic chance of a conviction.
Crown attorney Bryson McDonald said the Crown had assessed that "the realistic prospect of conviction was no longer there," according to Consequence. The Crown offered no evidence, and the defense moved for the charge to be dismissed. The judge granted the motion.
Smith's lawyer, Stan MacDonald, said his client was "pleased that this matter is now behind him and he's ready to move forward."
The Complainant's Statement
The woman, whose identity is protected, explained her decision in a statement. She said she would not testify "because I am unwilling to sacrifice my mental health."
"This process retraumatizes survivors," she said, describing how testifying subjects their experiences to intense public scrutiny.
A dismissal means the charge will not go to trial. It is not a finding by the court on whether the alleged assault happened.
The Charge Against Smith
Smith was charged in October 2025 with one count of sexual assault. The charge related to an alleged incident on December 30, 2017. He pleaded not guilty in February 2026.
After the charge became public, Smith stepped away from his role as managing director of Trailer Park Boys Incorporated, the company behind the franchise. At the time, the company said it was "aware of the allegation concerning Mike Smith dating back to 2017" and took "such matters seriously." Gary Howsam took over Smith's duties.
Following Thursday's ruling, the company announced that Smith would return to work.
"The court has dismissed the charge against Michael Smith, concluding the legal proceedings that began in October 2025 regarding an allegation dating to December 2017," Trailer Park Boys Incorporated said, according to Exclaim!. "Now that he is cleared of this matter, Mike is resuming his responsibilities with Trailer Park Boys Incorporated."
The company said it would not comment further.
Who Is Mike Smith?
Smith has starred in "Trailer Park Boys" since it premiered in 2001, alongside Robb Wells and John Paul Tremblay, who play Ricky and Julian. The mockumentary series follows a group of petty criminals living in the fictional Sunnyvale Trailer Park in Nova Scotia.
The show became a cult hit in Canada and later found a large international audience on Netflix. It has spawned several movies, spinoffs and live tours. Smith has also been a key creative force behind the franchise.
This is not the first time Smith has faced legal trouble. In 2016, he was arrested in Los Angeles on a misdemeanor domestic battery allegation after an incident at a hotel, according to AOL. Both Smith and the woman involved denied the allegation, and the case was dropped for insufficient evidence.
The company has said it is focused on delivering the long-awaited 13th season of the show.
