Ritz Finally Goes Gluten-Free, and Fans Are Thrilled
If you’ve been gluten-free for any length of time, you already know the drill. You scan the snack aisle, spot the familiar red box, then remember — nope, not for you. For over nine decades, Ritz crackers have been exactly that kind of tease for the gluten-free community.
That’s over now. On October 19, parent company Mondelēz International officially launched Ritz Gluten Free Crackers in Original Flavor — the first certified gluten-free product in the brand’s 92-year history. And based on the reaction online, people have been waiting a while.
“Us gluten free people have been waiting for days like these,” one fan wrote. “It’s getting easier and easier to be gluten free and it makes my heart so happy.” Another put it more succinctly: “This is what dreams are made of.”
Where to Buy Them Right Now
For now, the gluten-free Ritz are available exclusively at Walmart and Albertsons. The nationwide rollout to other retailers doesn’t happen until February 2027, so if you want them before the holidays, those are your two options. The 8-ounce box is priced at $4.49.
The cracker itself looks like the original — same circular shape, same scalloped edges, same golden-baked appearance. Mondelēz says it delivers the same buttery, flaky flavor fans know, with no artificial colors or flavors.
“Ritz is a modern brand built for today’s shared moments, and our fans have been asking for a gluten-free version for years,” said Olympia Portale, a spokesperson for Mondelēz International.
Why This Actually Matters
For most people, a new cracker is just a new cracker. For the roughly 3 million Americans living with celiac disease — plus the estimated 6% of the population with non-celiac gluten sensitivity — it’s a meaningful shift.
Ritz isn’t just a standalone snack. It’s an ingredient. Countless recipes call specifically for Ritz crackers: casserole toppings, appetizer bases, holiday cheese boards, classic chicken casseroles that generations of families have made exactly the same way for decades. When a household has someone with celiac or gluten sensitivity, those recipes get quietly sidelined. A certified gluten-free version of the original cracker — not a substitute, not a workaround — changes that.
The timing is deliberate. Launching in October puts the crackers on shelves just in time for holiday entertaining season, when the demand for shareable snacks and appetizer-building ingredients peaks. The February nationwide expansion will catch anyone who missed the initial rollout before the Super Bowl snack shopping rush.
What’s Actually In Them?
The new gluten-free Ritz are made with cornstarch, yellow corn flour, faba bean protein, tapioca flour, and oat flour — so no wheat. They also use invert sugar instead of the high fructose corn syrup in the original and contain no artificial colors or flavors.
One thing worth noting for people with celiac: the oat flour could be a concern if someone is sensitive to oats, even certified gluten-free ones — some people with celiac react to avenin (the protein in oats) even when the oats themselves are uncontaminated.
The Gluten-Free Snack Space Is Getting Crowded — In A Good Way
Ritz joins a growing list of legacy snack brands that have added certified gluten-free versions of their flagship products. Mondelēz’s own Oreo went gluten-free in 2020 and has been a steady seller since. Other cracker and chip brands have followed similar paths as the gluten-free market has grown from niche to mainstream.
The difference here is that Ritz is one of the most universally recognized crackers in America. Getting a certified gluten-free version of something this foundational into grocery carts before the holidays — especially at a mainstream price point — is the kind of thing that actually changes what ends up on the table for families managing dietary restrictions.
