Pfizer Is Paying $44 Million to Settle a Chantix Lawsuit
If you paid for the smoking-cessation drug Chantix several years ago, you may want to check your records.
Pfizer has agreed to a $44 million Chantix settlement in order to resolve a class action lawsuit over allegations that the medication contained an undisclosed nitrosamine impurity. And unlike some settlements that involve purchases from years ago, you don't need to dig up an old receipt right away to see if you qualify.
The deadline to file a claim is September 14, 2026.
Why Is Pfizer Paying $44 Million?
The lawsuit stems from a Chantix recall that began in 2021.
Chantix, also known by its generic name varenicline, is a prescription medication used to help people stop smoking. In 2021, Pfizer began voluntarily recalling lots of the medication after N-nitroso-varenicline was found to be above acceptable intake levels.
By September of that year, the recall had expanded to include all lots of Chantix 0.5 mg and 1 mg tablets. The class action lawsuit alleges that Pfizer manufactured and sold Chantix without disclosing the nitrosamine.
That said, the Pfizer settlement doesn't mean any wrongdoing has been established. Pfizer hasn't admitted any wrongdoing, and the court hasn't decided which side is right.
Instead, the $44 million agreement allows both sides to resolve the case without the uncertainty and expense of ongoing litigation.
What Was Found in Chantix?
The substance at the center of the case is N-nitroso-varenicline. It belongs to a group of compounds called nitrosamines.
According to the FDA, some nitrosamines are classified as probable or possible human carcinogens, based on laboratory testing. At the time of the recall, the agency said long-term exposure to N-nitroso-varenicline above acceptable levels could potentially increase the risk of cancer.
However, the FDA also stressed that there was no immediate risk to taking Chantix and the health benefits of quitting smoking outweighed the potential cancer risk associated with the impurity.
Who Qualifies for the Chantix Settlement?
The Chantix class action settlement covers people and third-party payors who paid any amount toward retail purchases of Chantix in the United States and its territories between September 29, 2015 and September 17, 2021.
If you bought Chantix during that period, even if you only paid for part of the cost of the prescription, you may qualify. If you submit a valid claim, your payment will be based on how much you paid for Chantix, and it won't exceed that amount.
You don't need to provide documentation with your initial claim, although the settlement administrator may ask for proof of purchase later.
Don't Miss the September Deadline
The court granted preliminary approval to the $44 million settlement on June 1, 2026. A final approval hearing is set for October 13th.
If you think you may qualify, you have until September 14, 2026, to submit a claim online or have a paper claim postmarked. Since the purchases covered by the settlement go all the way back to 2015, remembering exactly what you paid for Chantix may take a little digging.
But, with $44 million on the table and the deadline approaching, those old pharmacy records may be worth finding.
