Mary Louise Weller, 'Animal House' Actress, Dies at 79
Mary Louise Weller, the actress and former model best known for playing sorority girl Mandy Pepperidge in the 1978 comedy classic "Animal House," has died. She was 79.
Weller died on Thursday, October 1, after a brief illness, according to her longtime partner, Michael Roy Curtis, who confirmed her death to The Hollywood Reporter. She died one day before her birthday, TMZ reported. A cause of death has not been released.
Tributes Pour In
News of her death was shared in a post on her Facebook page.
"With a heavy heart I share that Mary Louise Weller passed away this morning after a brief illness," the post read, according to Forbes.
Her friend David Marks also remembered her online. "Beautiful Mary, friend, actress, model, equestrian, passed away quietly," he wrote, praising her lasting kindness.
Fans also shared tributes on social media, with many calling her "perfect" in the role and mourning the loss of "another legend," Parade reported. The family has asked for privacy.
Her Unforgettable 'Animal House' Role
In "National Lampoon's Animal House," Weller played Mandy Pepperidge, a member of the snobby Pi sorority at the fictional Faber College. Mandy was the girlfriend of Greg Marmalard, the uptight president of the rival Omega fraternity.
She appeared in one of the film's most famous scenes, in which John Belushi's character, Bluto, climbs a ladder to peek through the sorority house window. Weller was reportedly told early on that the part would be the one she was always most known for, and that prediction proved true.
Directed by John Landis, "Animal House" followed the misfits of the Delta Tau Chi fraternity and their war with the college dean. The cast also included Tim Matheson, Tom Hulce, Karen Allen, Kevin Bacon in one of his first film roles, and Donald Sutherland.
The movie became one of the most successful comedies of its time and helped define the college comedy genre. It was later added to the Library of Congress's National Film Registry, and it remains a pop culture touchstone more than 45 years after its release.
From Model to Actress
Before she turned to acting, Weller was a top fashion model in New York.
Her film career included "The Bell Jar" in 1979 and the 1982 action movie "Forced Vengeance," in which she starred opposite Chuck Norris. She also appeared in "Serpico," "Q" and "Blood Tide." In the horror film "The Evil," she played a college student, and she later played a marine biologist in the NBC TV movie "Hunters of the Reef."
On television, she was a familiar face in guest roles throughout the late 1970s and early 1980s. Her credits included "Baretta," "Kojak," "Starsky & Hutch," "Vega$," "Supertrain," "Fantasy Island," "CHiPs" and "Quincy, M.E."
Weller was candid about the kinds of parts she was often offered. "I was the beautiful girl in trouble or the rich guy's daughter who owns a Porsche and won't give you the time of day," she told the Los Angeles Times in a 1986 interview.
A Life Beyond Hollywood
After her last screen roles in the early 1980s, Weller kept a lower profile. Friends remembered her love of horses and her life as an equestrian.
Information about survivors and memorial plans has not been released.
For many fans, Weller will always be Mandy, one of the faces that made "Animal House" an enduring favorite. Her death comes nearly five decades after the film first hit theaters and turned its young cast into household names.
