Kylie Jenner to Star in Hulu Thriller Series 'Bachelorette Weekend'
Kylie Jenner is taking on her biggest acting role yet. The reality star and beauty mogul will headline "Bachelorette Weekend," a new thriller series that has landed a straight-to-series order at Hulu.
The project marks Jenner's first major scripted role, and it comes with a familiar name behind the camera. Her sister Kim Kardashian is executive producing the show.
A Bachelorette Party Turns Deadly
The series centers on a bachelorette weekend that ends in tragedy when the bride is found murdered in a pool. As the investigation unfolds, her closest friends all become suspects, and the story looks back at the events of the weekend to reveal how each of them may have played a part in what happened.
Jenner will play the bride, a character described as the "North Star" of the story, according to Entertainment Now. She will also serve as an executive producer.
No premiere date or additional cast members have been announced, and Hulu has not said how many episodes the first season will include.
How Kim Kardashian Brought It to Her Sister
The show is based on an unpublished book by Flora Collins. Author and screenwriter Lauren Oliver, known for the young adult novels "Before I Fall" and "Panic," created the series and wrote the adaptation.
Oliver first developed the project through her company, StoryGiants, before Kapital Entertainment, led by Aaron Kaplan and Jaiden Kaplan, worked on it further. The series is being produced by 20th Television and Kapital Entertainment.
Kardashian originally received the spec script as a possible producing project. She quickly saw it as a starring vehicle for her younger sister and passed it along, Reality Tea reported. Kardashian then brought the show to Hulu through her first-look deal with 20th Television.
The streamer has become a regular home for the family. Kardashian stars in and executive produces Hulu's legal drama "All's Fair," and the family's reality series "The Kardashians" also streams there. She has additional projects in development at Netflix and Paramount.
Jenner Caught the Acting Bug
Jenner has been hinting at a move into acting for months. Earlier this year, she made a cameo in "The Moment," an A24 mockumentary starring Charli XCX and directed by Aidan Zamiri, playing an exaggerated version of herself.
"I one hundred percent want to do more. I really like comedy. I think I'm good at it," Jenner told Vanity Fair in March, as reported by the Echo Live.
She explained that the cameo started as a joke she pitched to Zamiri. "I felt like it was a comfortable avenue for me because I knew him, I know Charli, and I felt like for my first thing, this would be the perfect fit," she said.
"Bachelorette Weekend" is a big step up from that small part, and a shift from comedy to thriller.
From Reality TV to Scripted Drama
Jenner, the youngest daughter of Kris Jenner, grew up on camera on "Keeping Up With the Kardashians," which premiered in 2007 when she was a child. She later starred in her own E! spinoff, "Life of Kylie," and built Kylie Cosmetics into one of the best-known celebrity beauty brands.
She has also tested other creative waters, including her music debut last year.
Her new series will stream on Hulu, which Disney has been folding into its main Disney+ app for U.S. viewers. The project puts Jenner alongside her older sister as the latest member of the family to make a serious push into scripted television.
