Gen Z Has a New Insult: Are You Living a ‘Polyester Lifestyle’?

First, Gen Z gave us cheugy. Then, we had to figure out whether we were larping our own personalities. Now, there's another potential problem: some of us may be living a polyester lifestyle.

The phrase is popping up on TikTok as polyester becomes increasingly uncool among younger generations. Gen Z has been checking clothing labels, talking about natural fibers, and questioning why so much of what we buy seems to be made from plastic. But a polyester lifestyle goes further than the tag inside your shirt.

What Is a Polyester Lifestyle?

Polyester is a synthetic fiber made from petroleum, and it's associated with fast fashion, mass production, and inexpensive clothing. Now a TikTok creator has taken the idea beyond clothing with the phrase “polyester lifestyle.”

Think cheap fast-fashion hauls, disposable purchases, plastic everything, and stuff bought for the latest trend, rather than the long haul. But the insult is broader than what we buy.

Saying someone is living a polyester lifestyle is a way of suggesting that an entire aesthetic, habit, or way of presenting themselves is cheap, artificial, or mass-produced. In other words, Gen Z has taken a fabric and turned it into an indictment on someone’s personality.

Gen Z Was Already Coming for Polyester

The new Gen Z slang didn’t come out of nowhere. Polyester has been having a rough time for a while. TikTok users have increasingly been showing off clothing labels, searching for cotton, linen, wool, or silk while criticizing brands for charging high prices for clothes made largely from polyester.

According to Cotton Incorporated's 2024 Lifestyle Monitor Survey, 66% of Gen Z consumers said cotton was their favorite fabric. Polyester and silk tied for a distant second at 5% each.

So polyester already had all the ingredients to become an insult.

You Can Have a Polyester Lifestyle Without Wearing Polyester

Here's where the new TikTok slang gets fun. A closet filled with clothes that were bought for microtrends and forgotten six months later? A polyester lifestyle.

Replacing perfectly good household items every time TikTok discovers a new aesthetic? You’re getting warmer.

A kitchen drawer overflowing with plastic gadgets somebody on the Internet promised would change your life? You may want to sit down for this.

The polyester lifestyle meaning isn't really about owning a polyester shirt. It's about a larger relationship with things that seem cheap, synthetic, disposable, or inauthentic. An apartment filled with mass-produced decor that will all be replaced when beige stops trending could be called polyester. 

So could an overly curated social media presence or a lifestyle built around constantly buying whatever the Internet has decided we need this week.

The Joke Is Bigger Than the Fabric

And that's what makes the phrase work so well as an insult. Calling someone's lifestyle "cheap" would be pretty straightforward. Calling it polyester paints a different picture.

Suddenly, we're imagining a fast-fashion haul, a plastic water bottle with a motivational saying, or a decorative object that someone bought because TikTok said we needed one.

Of course, one person's polyester lifestyle could easily be another person's perfectly normal Tuesday. That's the danger of giving Gen Z this much linguistic power.

Polyester Isn't the Enemy

There are legitimate environmental concerns about polyester clothing. It's derived from fossil fuels, doesn't readily biodegrade, and can shed microplastics.

But polyester also has its uses. It's durable, lightweight, wrinkle-resistant, and quick-drying, which is why it turns up in a lot of athletic clothing. So discovering polyester in your favorite leggings doesn't require an emergency wardrobe evacuation.

Like plenty of good Gen Z slang, a polyester lifestyle works because it turns something tiny into a hilariously large judgment about our lives. Keep the leggings. Choose the natural fibers if you want. TikTok’s latest fabric content doesn't get the final say on your lifestyle.
