FDA Updates Recall on More Than 27,000 Bags of White Rice
A white rice recall that quietly began back in April has resurfaced with a new update from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration.
The agency has officially classified the Lundberg rice recall as Class II. More than 27,000 two-pound bags of Lundberg Family Farms White Jasmine Rice are included in the recall due to the potential presence of foreign material.
Here's what to check before making your next pot of rice.
Check Your Bag of Lundberg Rice
The jasmine rice recall is limited to two specific lots of two-pound bags. Check your pantry for:
Product: Lundberg Family Farms White Jasmine Rice
Size: 32 oz. (2 lb.)
UPC: 073416040281
Lot 260201MA: Best before Feb. 1st, 2027
Lot 260202MA: Best before Feb. 2nd, 2027
According to the FDA recall record, 27,324 packages are included, yet the reason remains fairly vague.
The FDA lists it as potential contamination with “foreign materials,” without identifying exactly what those materials might be.
The FDA Calls It Class II
The classification for this FDA rice recall gives us a better idea of the potential risk. A Class II recall means that exposure to the product could cause temporary or medically reversible health problems, while the likelihood of serious consequences is considered remote.
While the recall is currently listed as ongoing in the FDA's enforcement system, that doesn't mean the affected rice is still sitting on store shelves. Lundberg Family Farms has said the affected rice came from a single production run and was removed from stores several months ago. The company also said no illnesses have been reported.
Rice Has a Long Shelf Life
February 2027 is a long way off for a pantry staple. The affected rice may have been pulled from store shelves months ago, but that doesn't mean every bag has disappeared from our kitchens.
If you bought Lundberg White Jasmine Rice earlier this year, take a look at the lot number and best-before date before using it.
A bag purchased in the spring could easily still be sitting in any one of our pantries today.
