England's Jordan Henderson Hospitalized After Falling During World Cup Win Celebration
Jordan Henderson was hospitalized with a serious wrist injury after a fall during England's celebration of its 3-2 World Cup win over Mexico, according to England manager Thomas Tuchel.
The incident occurred at Estadio Azteca in Mexico City following England's victory Sunday, which secured the team's place in the World Cup quarterfinals. As players celebrated by joining fans behind the goal to the sound of Oasis' "Wonderwall," the song that has soundtracked each of England's wins this tournament, Henderson attempted to hop back over an advertising board and onto the pitch. He clipped his foot on the way down and fell, bracing himself with his left arm as he landed.
"It's Quite Serious"
England defender Dan Burn quickly alerted medical staff after noticing Henderson grabbing at his wrist. Henderson was swarmed by teammates before being attended to on the field and eventually stretchered off while receiving oxygen.
Tuchel confirmed the severity of the injury to reporters after the match. "He injured his wrist. He is at the moment in the hospital," Tuchel said. "It is quite serious. It just doesn't fit to the evening that Jordan is now not with us. I don't know the procedure which is going on."
Henderson was transported to a hospital in Mexico City and did not travel back with the rest of the England squad to the team's training base in Kansas City.
Expected to Miss Rest of Tournament
Henderson, an unused substitute during Sunday's match, is expected to undergo wrist surgery and miss the remainder of the World Cup, according to The Athletic. He had received a yellow card in stoppage time after arguing with the referee and interfering with an England throw-in from the sideline, but did not see any playing time against Mexico.
The 36-year-old midfielder has made 91 World Cup appearances for England since his debut in 2010, and became the first male English player to appear in four separate World Cups earlier in the tournament during England's group-stage match against Panama.
A Hard-Fought Win
England's victory came despite a difficult second half, in which defender Jarell Quansah was shown a red card, reducing the team to 10 men. Mexico, one of the tournament's co-hosts, scored a late penalty to cut the deficit to one goal, but England held on for the win. Jude Bellingham scored twice within 98 seconds in the first half, and captain Harry Kane converted a penalty to help secure the result.
Henderson is not the only England player sidelined by injury during the tournament. Right back Reece James has also missed time after suffering a hamstring injury earlier in the World Cup.
