Dairy Queen Gets Spooky With Its New Halloween Menu
Dairy Queen is getting into the Halloween spirit, and apparently that means putting a little magic in the Blizzard — and quite a bit of heat on the chicken strips.
The chain is rolling out its first Halloween collection, called the Spellbound Series, with three new seasonal items arriving Sept. 28.
The star of the dessert lineup is the new Enchanted OREO Blizzard Treat. It starts with DQ's soft serve and OREO cookies, then gets an ube-flavored base and a purple shimmer that makes the whole thing look like it came out of a Halloween candy shop.
Ube, for anyone who hasn't wandered into the world of purple desserts yet, is a sweet purple yam that's become a popular flavor in everything from ice cream to cakes.
The Blizzard Isn't The Only Thing Getting A Little Theatrical
There's also the Bubble Brew DQ Sparkler, which is made with blood orange and lemonade, sparkling water and ice, then topped with cold foam. And this one comes with instructions.
Stir it. According to DQ, the drink starts bubbling and foaming as it's stirred, which is apparently where the “magic” comes in.
Then there's the item that takes the Halloween theme in a very different direction: Ghost Pepper Sauce. The new dipping sauce is described as smoky and fiery, and DQ is pairing it with its four-piece Chicken Strip Basket. So while one part of the Spellbound Series is busy looking purple and enchanted, another is basically daring customers to see how much heat they can handle.
The Halloween menu will be available from Sept. 28 through Nov. 1 at participating DQ locations.
But DQ Didn't Stop With Food
The chain is also releasing a collection of Mystery Blizzard Buddy plush keychains. They're sold in mystery packaging, so customers won't know which character they've gotten until they open it.
There are five designs in all: Blizabeth, Flip, Blenda, Brrrnie and Goldie. Each one costs $4 with a purchase at participating locations, while supplies last.
And Goldie is the one customers will want to find. The rare golden Blizzard Buddy comes with a pretty serious prize: a year of Blizzard treats. The promotion is open to eligible DQ Rewards members, with additional rules applying to the sweepstakes.
The whole thing is a first for Dairy Queen, which is calling this its first-ever Halloween collection. And the timing is pretty much perfect. Halloween menus have become their own seasonal event for fast-food chains, with restaurants competing for attention with increasingly colorful drinks, limited-edition desserts and food that's designed to disappear almost as quickly as it arrives.
DQ's version is sticking with the formula, just with a little more purple.
The Enchanted OREO Blizzard, Bubble Brew Sparkler and Ghost Pepper Sauce will all be available starting Sept. 28, but only for a limited time. So if the purple Blizzard is calling your name, there's a fairly small window to answer it.
