"American Horror Story" Renewed for Season 14 as Ryan Murphy Eyes Going Global
"American Horror Story" is not done scaring audiences yet. FX has renewed Ryan Murphy's long-running horror anthology for Season 14, and Murphy is already dreaming about taking the franchise overseas.
The renewal was announced just over a week before the Season 13 finale and is the show's first renewal in nearly seven years, Yahoo News UK reported, citing Deadline.
Fans Feared Season 13 Would Be the End
The news is a relief for longtime fans. FX last renewed the series in early 2020, when it picked up Seasons 11, 12 and 13 all at once. With no new orders after that, many viewers wondered whether the current season would be the show's final chapter.
Now it is clear the story will continue. No theme, cast or premiere date has been announced for Season 14, UPI reported.
Ryan Murphy Wants to Go Global
Murphy has made it clear he is thinking big about the show's future.
"I really want this show to go international," he said. "I'm interested in: what is an international version of 'Horror Story.'"
He did not say whether Season 14 would be that international version. "I don't know. I just like branching out," Murphy said.
That would fit his track record. Murphy has built a huge TV empire over the years and is also working on a "Glee" reboot, with members of the original cast showing their support.
What Season 13 Is About
Season 13 premiered Sept. 24 and has been one of the show's most ambitious chapters yet. It brings back characters from past seasons in a crossover-style story.
In the season, those characters team up to save the world from the devil, who is close to winning a bet with God that he can stay alive in a human body for 100 years, according to UPI. If Satan wins, he will be given control of Earth, Heaven and Hell.
The season features a long list of fan favorites, including Sarah Paulson, Evan Peters, Angela Bassett, Kathy Bates, Emma Roberts, Billie Lourd, Gabourey Sidibe and Leslie Grossman. Jessica Lange, who starred in the show's early seasons, also returned.
Several stars are back in familiar roles. Paulson is playing Cordelia Goode, Bassett is back as Marie Laveau, Roberts has returned as Madison Montgomery and Peters is once again playing James Patrick March. Even Twisty the Clown, the terrifying villain played by John Carroll Lynch, is back from an earlier season.
The season also brought in some big new names, including Ariana Grande, whose rep confirmed this summer that she is stepping back from the spotlight after her tour, as well as filmmaker John Waters.
Murphy has said a season like this one will never happen again, though he would like to revisit some of the characters on a smaller scale.
A Big Season for Viewers
Season 13 drew about 4 million streams in its first four days, which was called a historic premiere for the show.
Reactions have been mixed. Some fans found the many crossovers hard to follow, while others praised the season's production values and performances.
Over the years, the series has explored everything from haunted houses and witches to cults and killer clowns, with past seasons including "Murder House," "Asylum," "Coven" and "Freak Show."
Since it debuted in 2011, "American Horror Story" has earned more than 100 Emmy nominations and won 17 Emmys. Each season tells a new story, often with the same actors playing different characters, which has helped keep the show fresh for more than a decade.
The 13th and final episode of Season 13 airs Oct. 29 on FX, just in time for Halloween. Episodes stream on Hulu.
