Nearly 6 million French press coffee makers have been recalled due to the risk of serious burns. Is your coffee maker part of the recall? Read on for all of the details.

Millions of French Press Coffee Makers Recalled After Reports of Burns

The Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) has recalled 5.9 million French press coffee makers sold at a variety of big-box retailers across the U.S. and online. According to a notice posted to the CPSC website, models included in the recall include the Bodum 8-cup and 12-cup Bistro, Brazil, Caffettiera, Chambord, Crema, Java, Jesper and Kenya models. All of the impacted models come with replaceable glass carafes.

The CPSC notice also details that the models were sold between 1974 and October 2026, ranging in price from about $15 to $65. The products were sold at Walmart, Target, and several other home goods stores throughout the country. The coffee makers were also sold online at Bodum.com, Walmart.com, Target.com, and other online retailers.

These French press coffee makers were recalled after the manufacturer received 70 reports detailing that the glass container broke during use. Of these reports, 48 included concerns that the user suffered burns when the glass broke.

Bodum USA first issued the recall on October 29. The manufacturer said that the impacted French press glass carafes could shatter without warning if a metal spoon used to prepare the coffee damages or cracks the glass. Bodum said it issued the recall out of an abundance of caution.

The company noted, "While the rate of reported incidents involving carafe breakage during use is extremely low, especially considering that Bodum has sold millions of these products in the U.S. for decades, this recall will further encourage the safe use of our French Press Coffee Makers."

What to Do if You Use One of the Affected Coffee Makers

The CPSC told consumers who own this product to contact Bodum to receive a new plastic spoon to replace the metal product. The new plastic spoons will come with a warning about the danger of using a metal spoon. Consumers who own these affected French press machines are urged to stop using the metal spoons or any other type of metal utensil to stir the coffee inside the glass carafe.

For more information, consumers can call Bodum at 888-879-8213. Phone lines are staffed Monday through Friday from 8 am to 5 pm ET. You can also email the company at Bodum3302@sedgwick.com.

A French press machine is a manual brewing tool that is equipped with a mesh plunger used to separate the coffee grounds from brewed coffee. Unlike traditional coffee makers that send hot water over the grounds and then through a filter, a French press machine allows the grounds to soak in hot water to extract the flavor. This is a similar process to allowing tea to steep.
