Brian Thompson, the CEO of UnitedHealthcare, was fatally shot outside a Midtown Manhattan hotel on Wednesday morning. The attack occurred in one of the busiest areas of the city and has left investigators searching for answers and a community in disbelief.

What Happened?

The shooting took place at approximately 6:45 a.m. near West 54th Street and 6th Avenue, just outside the Hilton Hotel. Thompson, who had been serving as CEO of UnitedHealthcare since April 2021, was in New York to attend an investor meeting scheduled for later that day.

The 50-year-old executive was struck in the chest by a masked gunman who quickly fled the scene on foot, heading south down 6th Avenue.

While sources believe the shooter was not a guest at the hotel, it's unknown whether he had other business there. Witnesses reported seeing him hanging around near the hotel on 6th avenue.

Emergency responders rushed Thompson to Mount Sinai West Hospital, where he was pronounced dead shortly after arrival. The New York Police Department (NYPD) is treating the incident as a targeted attack, although the motive remains unclear at this time.

Law enforcement officials have launched a full-scale investigation into the shooting. The NYPD has released a description of the suspect, describing him as approximately 6 feet tall with a slim build. At the time of the attack, the assailant was reportedly wearing a cream-colored jacket, black gloves, black and white sneakers, and a black mask. He was also carrying a grey backpack.

Investigators are currently reviewing surveillance footage from the area and urging anyone with information about the shooting to come forward. The attack was close to the annual Rockefeller Center Christmas tree lighting, where the area was already under heightened security due to the popular holiday event.

The company was set to host an investor meeting at the Hilton Hotel on the day of the shooting, which Thompson was scheduled to attend.
