Will You Get An Extra Social Security Check in November?
As you know, Social Security recipients generally get one payment each month. However, some older recipients may see an extra check in November, due to how the calendar lines up at the end of the year.
Although this may seem like shocking Social Security news, it’s not all that uncommon because the Social Security Administration schedules payments well in advance. However, it might catch some seniors off guard if they’re not familiar with the timing, so let’s get into it.
Additional Social Security Check
Folks who will see an additional payment in November are those who are receiving Supplemental Security Income (SSI), a program designed for disabled adults and low-income seniors.
Some SSI recipients also receive traditional Social Security benefits, which are available to people starting at age 62, the earliest Social Security retirement age.
Next month, SSI recipients will receive an extra payment from their Social Security office. Some may even see up to three payments in November.
Here’s what to expect:
SSI recipients will receive their November check on Friday, November 1.
Social Security recipients who began receiving benefits before May 1997 – or who receive both Social Security and SSI – will also receive their Social Security payment on November 1.
Typically, these recipients would receive their Social Security payment on the 3rd. But, because that’s a Sunday, it’s moved up to November 1.Then, SSI recipients will receive a second check on Friday, November 29 – which is actually their December payment. Since December 1 falls on a Sunday, the December payment will arrive early, on November 29.
In short, SSI recipients will receive two payments in November – one on the 1st and one on the 29th. Those who also receive Social Security will then receive their regular Social Security check on November 1, instead of November 3.
Regular Social Security Benefits
For everyone else receiving Social Security benefits, their regular schedule remains in place. Social Security payments this month will be distributed on the second, third, or fourth Wednesday, depending on everyone's birthdate.
Here’s the November schedule for Social Security payments:
People born between the 1st - 10th will receive their payment on November 13.
Recipients born between the 11th - 20th will receive their payment on November 20.
Those born between the 21st - 31st will receive their payment on November 27.
Cost of Living Increase
Now, what about the upcoming cost-of-living adjustment (COLA)? Social Security recipients will see a 2.5% increase in their 2025 payments, with the average monthly check rising by about $50 to approximately $1,976.
The new, higher payments will begin in January:
People born between the 1st - 10th will receive their first COLA-adjusted payment on January 8.
Recipients born between the 11th - 20th will see their increase on January 15.
Those born between the 21st - 31st will receive theirs on January 22.
Folks who started collecting Social Security before May 1997 – or who receive both Social Security and SSI – will receive their COLA-adjusted check on January 3.
And SSI recipients will see their COLA adjustment with their December 31, 2024, payment.
Be Prepared for the Possibility of an Extra Check
If any of these conditions apply, be prepared for an extra check this month! It’s not technically additional money, it may just mean you have to adjust the timing of your budget accordingly.
