Trump Reposts Article, 'Shut Up About Egg Prices'
Since President Trump has taken office for the second time, he has made several moves that either concern or excite Americans. One of those changes has been instilling 25% tariffs on Canada and Mexico, which has people and economists worried about the future of consumer goods.
One of those consumer goods is eggs. Eggs have been a huge topic of conversation as their prices continue to rise. According to NerdWallet, egg prices rose by 53% in just one year, while food prices overall rose by 2.5% in the same time period.
Many Americans have expressed their frustration and concern with grocery store prices, but President Trump has his own response for them. Shut up about egg prices.
Rising Egg Prices
While the price of groceries are clearly going up, we can't put all the blame on inflation, Trump, or tariffs. The bird flu outbreak that started in 2022 has grown to become the largest in U.S. history. As of February 2025, bird flu has affected over 166 million birds in the U.S. since the start of 2022.
The bird flu has cause a shortage of eggs, causing grocery stores to raise their prices and even some restaurants to charge a surcharge for meals with eggs.
But Trump Promised to Bring Down Prices
During a press conference in August 2024, Trump pledged to bring down prices of packaged foods, meats, produce, condiments, milk, and you guessed it - eggs.
He was quoted saying, "When I win, I will immediately bring prices down, starting on Day One."
However day one has turned into month three, and prices are only going up. Lawmakers even added that Trump seems to be "backtracking" on these promises, stating that it's "hard to bring things down."
On February 26th, Secretary Brooke Rolins of the U.S. Department of Agriculture announced the Trump administration has plans to spend $1 billion to help combat bird flu and bring down egg prices. Also, about $100 million would go towards researching a vaccine, cut regulations, and explore egg import options.
'Shut Up About Egg Prices'
The Trump administration may have plans in place, but Trump seems to have an opinion of his own.
On the social media platform, President Trump reposted an article written by right-wing activist, Charlie Kirk, titled, "Shut Up About Egg Prices ― Trump Is Saving Consumers Millions."
In this article, Kirk argues that it's not Trump's fault egg prices are so high. While this may be partly true because of the bird flu outbreak, the promise to bring down prices on day one of his presidency is making some people think differently.
“Inflation is back,” he told Fox News, “I’m only here for two and a half weeks ... I had nothing to do with it.”
Kirk also wrote that President Trump's efforts, particularly through his Department of Government Efficiency, will benefit all Americans by saving them money. He also claims that egg prices will decrease soon as a result. But we haven't seen it yet.
Many critics took to social media to express their frustration with the president, posting that just months ago he was promising to bring down prices but is now telling people to shut up about it.
Although he didn't write it himself, sharing the article is enough to show people how he's really feeling about the current price of groceries.
Americans may have not seen a change in prices yet, but it doesn't mean it's not coming. We might just have to wait and see and deal with expensive eggs for now.
