Egg Prices Are Dropping For the First Time in Months

For what seemed like years, egg prices were higher than ever. Grocery store eggs reached a record high of about $8-$10 per carton, and restaurants were charging a surcharge for any meals with eggs.

However, some analysts think there is a light at the end of the tunnel as egg prices are finally starting to lower again.

Eggs Hit Record High

According to the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA), wholesale egg prices reached a record high of $8.17 per dozen on March 3, 2025. Compared to January 2023, when egg prices were about $4.82 per dozen.

While many people may have been quick to blame President Donald Trump for the prices sky rocketing, there were many other factors that contributed.

The main one being the bird flu virus. This virus had caused a shortage of eggs across the nation as farmers were grappling with sick egg-laying chickens. Inflation had also caused the prices of not just eggs, but all groceries to rise.

It seems like some relief is coming to consumers as egg prices have finally started to drop. Wholesale egg prices dropped to $4.83 on Friday, dropping 44% from $8.58 on February 28th.

Is this just a lucky coincidence or are eggs about to become affordable again?

The USDA market analysis stated the dropping prices are due to a taper off of bird flu outbreaks in March. This has helped the country recover its egg supply.

"Slowing [bird flu] outbreaks are leading to improved supply availability and wholesale market prices have responded with sharp declines over the past week," the USDA wrote.

Along with the bird flu, many consumers have stopped by eggs due to the high prices. While this may normally be bad for the market, it has helped with supply shortfalls.

Reminiscient of stockpiling toilet paper during the COVID pandemic, consumers were also buying eggs in bulk in fear the prices would keep rising. So, there's not an immediate need to restock.

Karyn Rispoli, an egg market analyst also added that market dynamics have put "extreme pressure" on egg prices to drop even more.

President Trump promised to drop prices of eggs on day one. Although we may not be able to give him sole credit, consumers are likely relieved of the new prices regardless of the reason.

Will Eggs Keep Dropping?

While this prices decline comes at a huge relief to consumers, experts are unsure of how much more or how long the dropping prices will last.

In general, it takes about two to three weeks for price drops to take effect, which means consumers will likely not see the changes right away. And they may still be paying high prices through the Easter holiday.
