You read that right — five years later, the Kansas City Chiefs are finally heading to the White House.

No, you didn’t miss a major plot twist in sports history; President Donald Trump just extended an invitation to celebrate their Super Bowl LIV victory, the one where they topped the 49ers 31-20 back in 2020.

Why the wait? You guessed it: COVID-19.

Trump’s Invite (And Why Now?)

President Trump, who recently spoke with Outkick's Clay Travis aboard Air Force One, decided the Chiefs deserved another chance at celebrating their missed moment. So, better late than never, I suppose.

Trump mentioned the Chiefs will get their White House moment sometime after the Eagles visit on April 28 to celebrate their recent Super Bowl LIX win.

While we don’t have an exact date yet, the timing alone makes this one of the more unusual invites in history. After all, this puts two NFL teams — one of which coming off a Super Bowl loss — in the spotlight within a very short timeframe. Not your typical White House sports calendar.

Quiet Chiefs, Loud History

So far, the Chiefs haven't responded to Trump's belated invitation. It's likely just too early to hear anything official, given how recently the invite was announced.

But don’t forget, Kansas City isn't new to 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue. Under President Biden, the Chiefs visited twice in the past two years, celebrating back-to-back Super Bowl victories in 2023 and 2024.

Who can forget tight end Travis Kelce almost hijacking Biden's podium during their visit last year? Kelce's playful moment quickly went viral, reminding everyone just how lively these visits can get.

Trump and the NFL: A Rocky Relationship

Let’s face it — Trump’s history with sports teams, especially NFL franchises, hasn't always been smooth sailing. Remember the Philadelphia Eagles debacle back in 2018? Trump revoked their invite after accusing them of disrespecting the anthem. He ended up hosting a "Celebration of America" instead, turning what should’ve been a friendly gathering into a political spectacle.

And it wasn’t just the Eagles. The Golden State Warriors also got their invite yanked after hesitating about their own White House trip. Trump's blunt "You're uninvited" became infamous, quickly turning into social media gold.

Even with this history, Trump has consistently expressed support for the Chiefs, particularly quarterback Patrick Mahomes. He attended Super Bowl LIX earlier this year and was open about thinking Kansas City would win, although he did leave at halftime.

Trump also praised Mahomes, coach Andy Reid, and even shouted out Chiefs fans for their loyalty and support after their AFC Championship win. Clearly, he's kept his eyes on this team over the years.

Making Up for Lost Time

Whether you're excited, confused, or simply amused by the idea, this invite is definitely something Chiefs fans didn't see coming in 2025. Honestly, who expected to be reliving Super Bowl LIV five years later?

But honestly, this could actually turn out to be a pretty fun moment — a chance for fans, players, and everyone involved to finally get that White House experience COVID unfairly took away.

Sure, it's unusual timing, and there's always a chance it turns awkward, given past political drama. Still, if there's one thing football fans know, it's that sports often give us the most unexpected storylines.
