Her boyfriend, Brian Hickerson, was present when she became unresponsive. He administered Narcan before paramedics arrived and provided first responders with a bag of her prescription medications upon their arrival. Hickerson is cooperating with investigators and is not identified by sources as the person who supplied the drugs.

According to sources familiar with the investigation, Panettiere took several black-market prescription pills during a flight from Los Angeles to South Carolina the day before her death. Sources say the drugs came from a long-time Los Angeles dealer who supplied Panettiere with oxycodone and other black-market prescription medications. The Drug Enforcement Administration has opened an investigation, with agents in both Los Angeles and South Carolina working to trace the laced pill back through the supply chain.
